General Present Tense

Mektup yazmak.	To write a letter.	make-toop yahz-mahk
Bir mektup yazıyorum.	I am writting a letter.	Beer make -toop yahzı-yohroom
Mektup yazarım.	I (usually, in general) write letters.	Make-toop yah-zah-rım
Kitap okurum.	I read books.	Kee-tahp oh-coo-room
Sinemaya giderim.	I go to the movies.	Cinay-mah-yah guee-day-reem
Şarap içerim.	I (occasionally) drink wine.	Şhah-rahp eechay-reem

There is, in Turkish, another from of the present tense (called general present) which indicates that the action does not necessarily take place in the present time

Bakmak	to look at	bakıyorum	I am looking at(presently)	bakarım	I look at(generally speaking)

The basis of the general present (aorist) tense of verbs is the 3 rd person singular which is obtained by adding "-er, -ar, -ir, -ır, -ür, -ur" (according to the euphony) to the stem (the vowel drops when the stem ends in a vowel). The suffixes of the present tense of "to be" (see 4 th lesson) are used to obtain the other persons.

Paul gözlüksüz görür mü?	Can (does) Paul see without spectacles.
Evet, görür. / Hayır, görmez.	Yes, he can see. / No, he can't see.
İyi yüzer misiniz?	Can (do) you swim well?
Evet, çok iyi yüzeriz.	Yes,we can swim very well.
Yalan söylemeyiz.	We do not lie.
Şüphesiz yalan söylemezsiniz.	No doubt you don't live.
İnsan havasız yaşar mı?	Can (does) one live with no air.?
Havasız bir yerde insan ölür.	Man dies in a place with no air.

Exercise 21. - Conjugate the general present tense of the two following verbs:
koşmak ( to run ) and uyumak ( to sleep ).

Various meanings of suffixes: "-ce, -ca" (-çe, -ça):

Vakit	time	vakitçe	of time
vakitçe dardayız		we have not much time
yaş	age	yaşça	of age, regarding age
yaşça gençtir		He (she) is rather young
Biz	we	bizce	in our opinion, as far as we are concerned
bizce bu yanlıştır		in our opinion this is wrong
